Rappers and movies have an extensive history. You could say they go hand-in-hand. Rappers have made albums that have had similar imagery to that of a movie. On the other hand movies have had soundtracks that can be enjoyed on their own merits. There’s always been another connection that can be made between these two industries, and that's between the creative leads of these respective industries.
1. Kanye West
Director Counterpart: Quentin Tarantino
This pairing is built mostly on similarities. Kanye and Tarantino are no strangers to making bold and brash content. The pair bring a unique style to their diverse and respective bodies of work. Outside of the screen and studio West and Tarantino are notoriously outspoken.
2. Kendrick Lamar
Director Counterpart: Ryan Coogler
Kendrick and Ryan have a deep history together. They’re both from California and most importantly take pride in their heritage. This can be seen in their respective projects like ‘Good Kid, M.A.A.D City’ and ‘Fruitvale Station.’ The two teamed up to work on the film ‘Black Panther’ with Coogler directing and Kendrick curating the film’s soundtrack. The two are for the culture and proved that they can make magic together.
3. Lil Uzi Vert
Director Counterpart: Edgar Wright
Fun fact: Lil Uzi Vert’s favorite movie is ‘Scott Pilgrim vs The World’, an Edgar Wright film. Lil Uzi Vert’s music has been heavily influenced by Wright’s work. I think a Scott Pilgrim style of film would fit the Lil Uzi Vert aesthetic perfectly.
4. Jay-Z
Director Counterpart: Martin Scorsese
Jay-Z and Martin Scorsese have one major thing in common...crime. A part of Jay’s legendary come up is that he sold drugs. No one can direct crime drama like Scorsese. This is the man behind Goodfellas, The Wolf of Wall Street, and Taxi Driver. Jay’s life is shrouded in crime and glamour, Scorsese is a no brainer.
5. Tyler, The Creator
Director Counterpart: Chris Renaud
This is probably the most ambitious entry on this list but oh well. I’m just gonna assume that you don’t know who Chris Renaud is. He’s the guy behind animated films such as Robots, the ‘Despicable Me’ trilogy, Sing, and The Grinch (2018). Tyler’s music has always had an abstract edge to it and I feel like animation is the perfect vessel to bring that to life. If the film takes a whimsical approach with simple character designs, an original score and soundtrack by Tyler, and a mature story, this film would be a hit.
