A Fall from Grace is just plain bad

Updated: Apr 11, 2020

Overview:

After a nasty separation from her ex-husband due to an affair, Grace Waters played by Crystal Fox feels restored when she strikes up a new romance. When secrets erode from her short-lived and seemly passionate new relationship, Grace’s vulnerable side takes an evil turn.

Initial Thoughts:

Ughhhhhhhhhhhh. This film, if you want to even call it that, is just awful. Tyler Perry Movies are so predictable and made for a certain audience that if you don’t fit that mold of a “damaged single mother”, “elderly black person that just wants to watch a movie”, or “white person who’s oblivious to Perry’s peddling of racial stereotypes” then none of his films are made for you. This film on a storytelling level just barely makes enough sense to get by. The big plot twist that comes at the end is surprising because the film drops the slightest hints and acts like its not that important. On a technical level this film is shot like its one of Perry’s lackluster soap operas, this film is just boring to look at. There’s nothing interesting done with lighting, set design, or extras in the background. The court room set was so dumb, it made me kind of mad. No lawyer would act in the way that Bresha Webb’s character, Jasmine does. The dumb choices made throughout the film isn’t helped by either the boring or OVERACTING that some of these god awful soap opera level actors bring to this film. Tyler Perry please stop dude..Jesus Christ.

Characters/Performances:

Crystal Fox as Grace: Grace is so boring. This woman has killed a guy and she’s acting like she’s in jail for a parking ticket. Crystal Fox has no emotion in this film. This woman’s life is falling apart and her acting doesn’t reflect that at all. What sensible person would look at this preformance and be invested? How can we expect to root for this woman if she seems like she’s not even rooting for herself.

Phylicia Rashad as Sarah: Okay so, Sarah is the villain of the film and she is also Grace's best friend. Rashad doesn’t do a bad job with this role she’s just the victim of awful writing, thanks Tyler Perry, and a dumb plot twist. Rashad has been in acclaimed films like Creed and, syndicated shows like the Cosby show. She’s proven herself as a competent actress but this film is a skid mark on her career. Phylicia stop working with Tyler, please.

Bresha Webb as Jasmine: Jasmine is a lawyer and she is without a doubt the dumbest character in the entire film. She’s brash and takes on problems where she knows the consequences and just doesn’t care. What lawyer would do that? What lawyer would allow themselves to get arrested during a trial? I’ll tell you what lawyer would do that…Jasmine. The only character thats dumber than Jasmine is her boyfriend Jordan, played by Matthew Law. Jordan is a cop and in the film we see this guy “arrest” two people and handcuff them then turn around and just leave them…? Like why jordan? This Ultimately results in the main Villain Sarah getting away in the end.

Mehcad Brooks as Shannon: Remember what I said earlier about OVERACTING? Well Shannon is why we’re talking about it. So Shannon is one of the villains in this film and he basically scams Grace out of all of her assets by legally marrying her. Once he’s found out he goes sicko mode. I feel like his performance belongs in a superhero movie because of how over the top it is. There’s a part where Shannon is smoking a cigarette and he yells at Grace to get him an ashtray, instead of saying “get me an ashtray” in a menacing way he just does an evil laugh and says “ASHTRAY BITCH”

Final Thoughts:

This film’s problems are so apparent. Tyler Perry has been making movies for so long I’m starting to wonder if he even cares at this point. This film is boring to look at the actors are boring, the story doesn’t even keep the audience engaged. This film is just a waste of time and I’m mad that I can’t get the 1 hour and 55 minuets that I spent watching this film back. Tyler Perry’s Formula is predictable and we’ve seen it so many other times before so why do we care this time?
