A Madea Family Funeral made me want to die.

Overview:

A family reunion turns sour, as a sudden death leads to an unexpected funeral that could uncover dark secrets.

Initial Thoughts:

This film is...wow. I can’t believe how unbearable it was, on jah. This movie drags along and stretches out every joke. I was so mad sitting through this, I’m still mad that I have to talk about it! Tyler Perry, why have you forsaken us? I am so sick of seeing the same old characters, pun intended, and the same character types. At this point, I don’t see Madea or Joe or any other character he plays. All I see is Perry in a wig. We all know it’s not a Tyler Perry movie if it doesn't have cheating, lies, some type of separation, a church setting, old people, and some angry guy. The “comedy” here just misses, it's like an air ball the whole time. The film stops, what should be, emotional moments to tell jokes. There’s scenes where people make faces like they’re crying but...where are the tears? They just make faces and noises. The acting in this stinks. The acting smells like a skunk with a yeast infection. This one character, AJ, OVER-ACTS. He’s basically in a blind rage throughout the film. This film looks like one of his shows too. No surprise there. He also uses the same actors from his shows. No surprise there, either.

Characters/Performances:

Tyler Perry as Madea, Joe, Brian, and Heathrow: It’s standard for Perry to play multiple characters in his films. We have the regular line up of people here with Madea, Joe, and Brian. Heathrow is new and was written for this film. I’m going to start with Brian. Tyler Perry is weird playing a normal guy. Brian is supposed to be the voice of reason with all of the elderly people here. It’s not that Perry isn’t capable of being himself, I just don't buy it. Okay, who’s next? Joe? He’s a creep, dude. He’s always throwing himself at younger girls. You know what, Heathrow is a creep too. They’re always plotting on women and, JOE IS MARRIED. You know what would happen to me if I did that? My girlfriend would kill me. Madea is Madea. She’s loud, aggressive, and stereotypical. You know what I mean. I wish she died in this film.

Patrice Lovely as Hattie: This is the most annoying person. Everytime she talked, I had the urge to cover my ears. I hated her character. I hated her voice, it's so squeaky and she talks soooooo much. The biggest sin is that she wasn’t funny. This character is poorly written, acted, and all of the jokes fall flat. I’m getting mad typing this, let's move on.

Courtney Burrell as AJ: Courtney isn’t a guy name. I’m sorry, I had to get that off my chest. There was this kid in my second grade class and his name was Ashley. The other kids used to make fun of him, and he started going by his middle name. ANYWAYS, Burrell does what’s common in the Tyler Perry movies. He’s OVER-ACTING. Yes, that has to be capitalized. AJ is cheating on his wife and is mad that his dad just passed away. Everytime someone tries to call him out on his actions he always says “man, my daddy just died.” That’s poor writing, Tyler! AJ/Courtney suck. New drinking game, take a shot everytime AJ disrespects his wife, storms out of a room, mentions that his “daddy just died,” and cheats. If you’re still alive when the movie is over, I’ll give you $10.

Final Thoughts:

A Madea Family Funeral made me jealous of the person that died. The “comedy” can be summed up to “hahaha...old people shouldn’t say those things.” This film came out in 2019 and Joanne the Scammer is in it. Remember when that was a thing? This movie is so misguided. Does it want to be a comedy or a drama? There’s never an in-between. Tyler please stop. Go back to making plays or something.
