When it comes to horror films it’s easy to make something generic. There’s a lot of sub-genres like slashers, found footage, zombie films, body horror and many others. When you find something that stands out it’s pretty rare but cool. Here’s a hidden gem that you should check out. Also spoilers, this movie is on HBO Max.

Orphan came out in 2009 and is about a family that recently lost their new born baby. The couple then decides to adopt a 9 year old girl who isn’t as innocent as she seems. This movie can be hard to watch at times. It’s definitely intense when it needs to be. Just the first 5 minutes are disturbing as we see a dream sequence of the mother Kate, played by Vera Farmiga, losing her baby due to complications while giving birth. The film just makes you feel so sorry for Kate. So much happens to her throughout this film. Even when it becomes apparent that Esther, the orphan, played by Isabelle Fuhrman is behind everything, no one believes her. The film’s color pallet is so bleak. Everything is dark and grey, the weather is always gloomy, and everyone is wearing dark clothes.
