Seriously, Who’s the Best Spider-Man?

I’m sure it’s safe to say that everyone here has seen at least one Spider-Man movie, right? There’s so many to choose from. The one that started it all being the Tobey Maguire trilogy, directed by Sam Rami. Then, the series got rebooted in 2012, starring Andrew Garfield, and gave us two more films directed by Marc Webb. Now, we have the Tom Holland series that is currently ongoing. So far, Director Jon Watts has made two films in this saga. So, with 7 films and 3 different actors I have to ask...who’s the best?

Tobey Maguire

In 2002, the world saw Spider-Man in theaters for the first time. With director Sam Rami and star Tobey Maguire, the film would spawn two sequels and give birth to the superhero movie genre. Since this was a lot of people's introduction to the character, they needed to capture Spider-Man as well as Peter Parker perfectly. Tobey Maguire was a perfect Peter Parker. He looks nerdy, awkward, and dorky. When there’s scenes between Parker and his love interest, Mary Jane, you kinda cringe and get second hand embarrassment, but in a good way. It’s a double edged sword because Maguire plays Parker TOO good. When he eventually becomes Spider-Man, he’s quipping and joking in his nerdy voice which kinda takes me out of it.

Andrew Garfield

In 2012, the Spider-Man franchise was rebooted. At this time people were very familiar with seeing this character on the screen. Spider-Man’s comic book lore became more popular as well. This reboot needed to keep Spider-Man relevant and fresh, that’s it...but it sucked. Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man fails in so many fundamental ways. The Amazing Spider-Man of 2012 tries to modernize Peter Parker’s origin story. Which is okay, but I don’t think the director, Marc Webb, understood how to do that??? Peter Parker is supposed to be a nerd, but he skates and wears Thrasher. That doesn’t sound nerdy to me. I will give this Franchise some credit though. Marc Webb knows how to develop romance. He directed this film called 500 Days of Summer which was a romance film and it was pretty great. The romance between Peter and Gwen in this movie is handled well.

Tom Holland

Okay, Disney bought Marvel a few years ago. Marvel and all of it’s heroes started a film franchise called the MCU. Disney wants to bring Spider-Man into the MCU, but there’s one problem. Spider-Man’s film rights belong to a different movie studio, Sony. Disney and Sony make a deal to share Spider-Man. Disney gets to make movies with Spider-Man and Sony makes money from all of the merchandise like toys and stuff. Are you still with me? Okay, I’ll keep this one short. Tom Holland is fun. It’s fun to see him interact with other heroes after so many years. I like seeing his gadgets and the new villains he’s battled so far. However, this new Spider-Man is constantly in Iron Man’s Shadow. Even after Tony Stark dies, (oops spoiler ahaha) he’s still trying to live up to his legacy. Why can’t Spider-Man just be Spider-Man?

This is how you make the perfect Spider-Man

Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parker

+

Andrew Garfield’s romance

+

Tom Holland’s fun and comedic stories, gadgets, and world building

Boom! you got a perfect Spider-Man just like momma used to make
