When Disney Plus launched in late 2019, consumers jumped at the chance to be able to rewatch their favorite classic animated films. With an entertainment giant like The Walt Disney Studios, Disney Plus wouldn’t be short on content. Disney’s subsidiaries are the likes of Marvel Studios, Lucasfilm, Pixar Animation Studios, and 20th Century Studios so it’s no surprise that original content would be produced exclusive to Disney Plus. Sounds like a sweet deal right?
Well, the problem with Disney Plus lies in its reliance on its assets. Normally that isn’t a bad thing, but when you want to market your service to the masses, you need to have content available for the masses. Disney is known as a company that produces entertainment for children, but where is the mature content? If you’re an adult wanting to take a trip down memory lane, then Disney Plus would be a good novelty. Disney fails to understand that nostalgia doesn’t last forever. If you keep revisiting the wonder years, eventually they’ll stop being wonderful. The original content that the service offers either builds off of a pre-existing franchise, or leans on the brand that it uses to help market it. Playing it safe doesn’t always pay off.
