Who’s the Best Rapper Turned Actor?

Music and acting are two completely different forms of art. While being so different, it’s easy for the two to come together in multiple ways. Whether it’s an original soundtrack or a musical. I have a different question though, who’s the best rapper turned actor?

1. Tupac

Movie recommendation: Juice

Tupac has starred in a number of dramatic films like Juice, Above the Rim, and Gang Related. He is definitely the most compelling actor on this list. Being in mostly drama films, Tupac can bring emotion into a scene and portray a complex character in the process.

2. Ice-T

Movie recommendation: New Jack City

Ice-T is a terrible actor. He only plays supporting roles in big budget films. Outside of New Jack City and Law and Order: SVU, Ice-T’s acting career is pretty forgettable. I’ll give him some credit in regards to his voice acting, only because his voice is very distinct.

3. Will Smith

Movie recommendation: I am Legend

Will Smith is a money magnet. He’s the only actor to have 8 consecutive films gross over $100 million domestically. Basically if you put Will Smith in a movie, people are going to see it. Everyone loves him and has that one Will Smith movie that they’ll always watch.

4. Queen Latifah

Movie Recommendation: Set It Off

Queen Latifah is a paradox. Besides “U.N.I.T.Y.”, I don’t know any other songs by her. I’ve never heard anyone say, “This Queen Latifah song is fire bro!” Her acting isn’t as forgettable as her music. With films like Set It Off, Taxi, and Girls Trip, I think it's safe to say that she’s a more successful actress than rapper.

5. Mos Def

Movie recommendation: Be Kind Rewind

Mos Def is a unique entry on this list. Being an accomplished rapper, Mos Def chose to take a step back from music. As far as movies go, Mos Def stars in mostly indie films but isn't a stranger to big budget productions like The Italian Job. He’s also done voice overs on The Boondocks and has been a recurring actor in The Chappelle's Show.
